| Abstract | This paper proposes a model, with experience as the key concept, which focuses on the continuity of changes throughout adulthood. It assumes that as people move through time, they continually make experiences, the quantity, range and content of which may vary across individuals. A distinction is suggested between the process of "making experiences," which refers to a dynamic process in which experiences are continuously modified, and that of "having experiences," which refers to the more or less stable outcome of accumulated experience. Allowing for individual differences in the propensity to seek novel or familiar experiences, the model predicts not only quantitative changes in the developing person, but also qualitative transformations which interact with ontogenetic changes. In an endeavor to aid the introduction of a positive ideology concerning changes in late adulthood, the paper focuses on positive outcomes of accumulated experience, (such as sense of freedom or interest in spiritual concerns) which emerge from an interaction of developmental changes and the dynamics of making experiences in the course of one's life.
