AbstractThe document presents background information and activities for use by elementary school classroom teachers as they develop and implement programs on multiethnic education. Multiethnic education is interpreted as the inclusion in the curriculum of study about the heritage and contributions of the culture and ethnic groups that comprise American society. The document is presented in two parts. Part I offers background information on pluralistic education, defines key vocabulary terms, and presents tips for teachers working with culturally different parents and children. Part II, which comprises the bulk of the document, suggests 13 classroom activities. For kindergarten and primary levels, activities involve children in study about physical differences by looking in a mirror and creating self-portrait collages. For middle elementary levels, suggested topics include disadvantages of judging by initial impression, empathy, and immigrants. Activities involve students in puppet shows, role-playing exercises, museum trips, analysis of children's literature, and preparation of a questionnaire about the ethnic background of class members. In the upper elementary grades, students are introduced to personal implications of ethnicity, inter-ethnic exchanges within the school, and evaluation of student and teacher attitudes toward ethnic education. Activities involve students in creating personal and family profiles, compiling questionnaires, interviewing resource people, and presenting oral reports. For each activity, information is presented on objectives, materials, procedure, follow-up activities, and resources. The appendix includes an annotated bibliography and a listing of curriculum materials. (Author/DB)
