Abstract | This study considers some aspects of "prisonization," or the process by which inmates adapt to confinement. Specifically, it further examines two ideas suggested by earlier studies. One is the belief that the structural characteristics of many prisons promote rather than inhibit assimilation into an inmate normative system that is opposed to the prison organization and many institutions of the larger society. The other considers the relations between inmates' preprison experiences, their contacts with the larger society during confinement, and their perceptions of their probable postrelease life chances. After presenting some theoretical considerations, the paper examines how effective indicators of these influences are in accounting for variance in observed levels of prisonization within the inmate population of a large maximum security federal penitentiary.
