Abstract	The Career Development and Information System (CDIS) is a longitudinal tracking system addressing itself to the distribution of new physicians in underserved areas, and in the field of primary health care as opposed to a specialty. It is comprised of several computerized modules. The Comprehensive Research, Evaluation and Assessment Module (CREAM) stores information on 1,200 variables collected from some 9000 students, and monitors and records the movement of these students into and out of various experiential opportunities. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Feedback Module (MBTI) provides students with information on their own preferred types of activities and psychological functioning. The Preceptorship Information Module (PIM) and the Residency Information Module (RIM) are computerized data files about various primary care preceptorship and residency programs across the country. The Work Setting Information Module (WIM) is a booklet describing the activity, time allocation, and allied health staffing characteristics of various specialties in different work settings. The System of Physician and Community Contact (SPACC) is a computer file of communities and physicians, focusing on underserved areas. With the system, it is hoped that the distinguishing characteristics of those who choose to enter primary care practice in underserved areas can be identified, and that the available information will be used in policy decision-making.
