| Abstract | Described is a study in which videotape recordings of the language of 11 hearing impared children (2-4 years old) were analyzed according to 16 pragmatic and 13 semantic functions. Findings are presented for the following study aspects: reliability of coding, effects of degree of hearing loss and intervention, oral communicative behavior, nonverbal communicative behavior, combined verbal and nonverbal behavior, individual behavior, and comparisons with hearing children. Among implications discussed are the following findings: the number of communicative acts per minute which a child produces increased with age; hearing impaired Ss lagged behind hearing children in the acquisition of verbal semantic functions, although the hearing impaired Ss progressed more according to the norm for pragmatic than semantic functions; and degree of hearing loss and age of subject together predicted fairly well the number of semantic and pragmatic verbal functions.
