Abstract | The atlas contains almost 40 photographs and 40 maps of geographical aspects of the Netherlands: the coast, dikes, canals, towns, and farmland. Each page contains a photograph, a section of a map showing the area in which the photograph was taken, and a discussion of several paragraphs about the geographical problems of the area and how they have been met. Many of the photographs are aerial, providing a clear view of canals and roads through towns, shipping and river traffic routes, and piers and dikes extending into coastal waters. Content includes the topographical differences between the "high" and "low" Netherlands, land reclamation, Zuyder Zee works, delta works, water control (reservoirs and shipping docks), river towns, horticulture, industry (pipelines and factories), foreign trade, inland motor traffic, recreation, and urban planning. The maps show features such as main, secondary, and unpaved roads, dikes, railways, canals, bridges and locks, church steeples, lighthouses, windmills and watermills, provincial boundaries, contours, fields and orchards, woodland, arable land, heath, and dunes.
