AbstractThe student textbook and the teacher's manual focus on the services, organization, and funding of county government in Georgia. Designed to be used over a three to six week period, the textbook is arranged into six chapters. Chapter one discusses county government, its services, and its structure. Chapter two focuses on county officials and their departments, including the county clerk, sheriff, judge, treasurer, and tax commissioners. The sources of county funds, taxes, federal and state aid, and non-tax revenue are dealt with in chapter three. Chapter four discusses the courts, including case law, the Superior Court System, juries, and courts serving the counties (justice of the peace, juvenile courts). Changing populations is the topic of chapter five. It emphasizes factors influencing population increase and decrease and their ramifications. The final chapter examines current concerns, including financial problems, consolidation of services, and decentralized power. Each chapter concludes with a discussion section which is a series of questions. The teacher's manual contains a suggested time schedule for the 23 lessons. The activities include fact sheets, readings, case studies, simulations, graph interpretation, and numerous opportunities to involve students in investigation of problems and structure of county government.
