Abstract | In this paper, a theory of the academic achievement process of learning is proposed. Learning is seen as the outcome of the utilization of learning opportunities created in the teaching process by students themselves. These students are characterized by a certain level of ability and effort. The theory is first formulated in a single equation model for learning in which students' ability and effort is assumed constant over time. This model is then modified to take into account an interdependency between effort and achievement. Implications are derived of the proposed conceptions of the learning process for research on school effects and on inequality of educational opportunity. (Author/GC) |
