Abstract | This is an overview of a project in which cross-age tutoring is used as a means of enhancing the learning and motivation of the tutors, in contrast to the practice in which the learning of the tutee is the primary focus. This teaching method is referred to as the "Learning-Tutoring Cycle." It is recommended that secondary students who are in need of remedial work in basic skills reinforce their knowledge of these skills by tutoring young students in the elementary grades. In four chapters this overview of the project discusses: (1) the Learning-Tutoring Cycle as a method of instruction; (2) recommended implementation strategies at the local level; (3) recommended federal actions; and (4) the likelihood of success. Appendices include an empirical policy study, a brief bibliography, and a discussion on the rationale of this program as it applies to disadvantaged students. (JD) |
