AbstractThe curriculum guide presents the activities component of the Human Development Program for grade four. The Human Development Program (HDP) is an affective curricular approach developed by psychologists to help teachers instill responsibility and self-confidence in children. The activity guide presents topics and directions for 180 sequential Human Development Sessions in which teachers and students sit in a circle (called a Magic Circle) for 20 minutes each day to talk about feelings. Topics are based upon awareness, self-confidence, and social interaction. The major objectives are to encourage children to show acceptance of themselves and others, and to listen to and focus upon the feelings of others. Fourth grade discussion sessions reinforce these objectives through role play, reflective listening, dream exploration, problem solving, and simulation of experiences based upon acceptance of individual responsibility. Topics include I felt good and bad about something; I understand positive and negative aspects of given behaviors; I have many kinds of self-control; I couldn't avoid trouble; I got what I wanted in my dream; I do these things to keep a friend; and I can tell the difference between real and not so real. The guide presents information to the teacher on preparing the Magic Circle session, explaining the topic for discussion, leading the daily session, and helping the children review and summarize what they learned.
