AbstractThe curriculum guide presents the activities component of the Human Development Program for the third grade. The Human Development Program (HDP) is an affective curricular approach developed by psychologists to help teachers instill responsibility and self-confidence in children. Following a brief overview of the HDP and explanation of the Magic Circle (an activity in which students and teachers sit in a circle for 20 minutes each day and discuss a topic related to feelings), the guide presents topics and directions for 180 Magic Circle sessions. In each session, the intent is that children will show acceptance of themselves and each other, listen to each other, and focus upon each other's feelings. First and second semester schedules comprise alternating two and three week units. The units include awareness activities (positive and negative feelings, thoughts, and behavior); mastery activities (power and effectiveness, problem solving, and self-control); and social interaction activities (approval, attention, and leadership). Examples of topics are how I got into trouble; how I avoided trouble; how I got somebody to pay attention to me; how I paid attention to somebody else; how I said something I didn't mean; and how I shared in making a decision. The guide also presents information to the teacher on preparing Magic Circle sessions, explaining the topic for discussion, leading the daily session, and helping the children review and summarize what they learned.
