AbstractThe curriculum guide presents the activities component of the Human Development Program for the second grade. The Human Development Program (HDP) is an affective curricular approach developed by psychologists to aid teachers in instilling responsibility and self-confidence in children. The guide presents topics and directions for 180 sequential Human Development Sessions in which teachers and students sit in a circle (called a Magic Circle) for 20 minutes each day to talk about feelings. The topics are based upon awareness, self-confidence, and social interaction. The major objectives are to encourage children to show acceptance of themselves and others, and to listen to and focus upon the feelings of others. Second grade discussion topics reinforce these objectives by articulating a wide range of experiences in positive and negative feelings, encouraging positive self-concepts, and providing opportunities for students to make suggestions for improving group functioning. Topics include pleasant feelings and unpleasant feelings, getting and giving approval, getting attention, doing something that somebody liked, and knowing the truth but lying anyway. The format of each Magic Circle topic includes instructions to the teacher on how to prepare the session, explain the topic, lead the daily session, and help the children review and summarize what they learned.
