AbstractFall 1977 first census enrollment in the Los Angeles Community College District was 129,296, showing a 2.5% increase over fall 1976 and a reversal of the previous year's enrollment decline. Major factors suggested as contributing to this increase include more vigorous recruitment efforts, increased student retention due to special college and district programs, new facilities, and an increase in recent high school graduates. Evening class enrollment grew 6.1%, with day enrollment increasing 2.2%. Increases among sophomore (12.6%) and first-time students (7.4%) suggest that retention and recruitment efforts are having some effect. Total weekly student contact hours (WSCH) increased 1.5%, with day WSCH dropping slightly (0.7%) and evening WSCH rising (7.0%). Minority student enrollment grew to more than 60%, an increase of almost 12% from last fall. Mean student age remained at 29 years, with enrollment among those over 55 years increasing 14.7% and those under 20 years increasing 12.0%. Community service non-credit courses enrolled 16,745, instructional television courses enrolled 1,539, and overseas programs enrolled 8,18l. In comparison, other Los Angeles County community colleges enrolled 183,792 students and county four-year colleges and universities enrolled 98,462. (LH)
