Abstract | The purpose of this paper is to propose policies and priorities for State Library activity in continuing library education for fiscal years 1977, 1978, and 1979, and to provide background information needed to evaluate these proposals. Section II of this paper outlines the context for continuing library education in terms of: (1) the citizens and their library and information needs; (2) the libraries (public, school, university, institution, special) of the state; (3) the librarians themselves. Section III focuses on eight important Ohio library development issues (funding, interlibrary cooperation, improved library services, library management, public relations, technology, audiovisual services, library standards) and identifies the implications of these issues for continuing library education. Section IV discusses the resources available to meet the continuing education needs identified. Section V is a statement of the major problems which may inhibit the most effective application of these resources. The next section identifies the major strategic options available to the State Library, including a statement of the relevant goals and identification of some constraints relating to each. The paper concludes with a recommended plan of action and specific program objectives. (Author/JAB) |
