Abstract | The financial position of California's independent nonprofit postsecondary institutions and their financial progress are examined in this research report. Study data were derived from the audited financial statements of the institutions, recoded to NACUBO standards, and limited to fiscal 1974 and 1975. Current fund revenues and expenditures are studied in terms of distribution, educational and general revenues, and average expenditures per FTE student. Institutional risk is examined regarding unstable revenues, diminishing reserves, debt exposure ratios, and debt service coverage. Institutional financial position and progress are also reported. It is concluded that: (1) overall, in terms of revenue, the independent college industry in California is doing modestly better than the rest of the country; (2) most of the private colleges are heavily dependent on tuition and gift revenue; and (3) changes in personal income, population, and state and federal student aid can be expected to greatly impact the institutions.
