| Abstract | Five components of communication competence have been derived from research: affiliation/support, empathy, behavioral flexibility, social relaxation, and interaction management. This paper describes these dimensions of communication competence; it then reports on a study in which two college females judged by their peers to be effective communicators, and two judged to be ineffective, participated in conversations that were videotaped and analyzed with regard to the five components of communication competence. Analysis of the findings indicated that the persons judged more competent signaled more affiliation/support and empathy, demonstrated more social relaxation, and managed their interactions more smoothly through the use of more management cues. No significant differences in behavioral flexibility were noted. The report notes implications drawn from the data and points out directions for future research. (GW) |
