| Abstract | The report of the Bullock Committee of Enquiry was published in January 1975, under the title "A Language for Life," and presented extensive recommendations concerning all aspects of English teaching, including reading, writing, talking, and listening, the role of initial and inservice training, and monitoring of general levels of student attainment. The present report is the response of the National Union of Teachers to the emphases and recommendations of the Bullock committee. Major aspects of the Bullock Report are summarized, with commentary on those aspects considered to be of most concern to members of the union. Appendixes report results from a survey on the implementation of certain aspects of "A Language for Life," selected facts relevant to committee recommendations, comments on unqualified persons and the teaching of reading, resources related to the Bullock Report, and two specific examples of a basic language course.
