Abstract | Traditional and self-paced methods of teaching college freshman composition were compared in this study of pretest and posttest essays written by selected freshman English composition classes. The 96 pretests and posttests obtained were rated analytically for unity, organization, development, style, and mechanics. Analysis of covariance indicated no significant differences between the two approaches, for total score, unity, style, organization, or mechanics; but the traditional students showed a more significant increase in the development score than did the self-paced students. Comparison of pretest scores with posttest scores indicated that the group, as a whole, had improved its total score and scores for unity, organization, development, and style, during the quarter of composition instruction.
