Abstract	This booklet was written to provide elementary-school teachers with an overview of some of the research results related to the development of computational skills, together with ideas for classroom activities which have grown out of research projects. The booklet is organized into twelve sections, the first of which is devoted to delineating the task of computation. Subsequent sections concern specific instructional goals. Sections for whole numbers and for fractions are devoted to each of the instructional activities: introducing, reinforcing, maintaining, transferring, and applying computational skills. Within each section, relevant research is reviewed. Items of particular interest, frequently summaries of advice to teachers or examples, are highlighted by printing in colored boxes. The concluding section advises teachers to engage in informal research regularly in their own classrooms, and suggests directions in which future research is likely to lead. A bibliography is included. (SD)
