Abstract	The purpose of this study was to investigate existing state laws and court decisions related to teacher responsibility and liability during field trips. Literature on field trips as an educational activity and on teacher responsibility while leading field trips was reviewed. A normative survey was conducted, using an opinionnaire specifically designed for this purpose. These instruments were mailed to the attorneys general, state superintendents of public instruction, state education associations, state school board associations, and teacher unions of all 50 states. It was found that there are few pertinent state laws and few recent court cases, the teacher conducting a field trip is no more liable to tort liability than a teacher in his own classroom, liability insurance is available in many states, and, while some states are removing the doctrine of sovereign immunity for their statutes, many are adopting "save harmless" laws in these areas. It is recommended that departments of education recognize the field trip as an integral part of the educational program and that state legislatures enact statutes requiring adequate liability and accident insurance coverage for all persons while in the classroom and on field trips.
