| Abstract | This paper presents a sketch of the characteristics of a group of professionals whose work involves helping others. The author attempts to define individuals who are concerned primarily with the helping professions, and to outline some of the attributes unique to them. He tries to identify factors distinguishing those who are successful from those who are not. He then takes up how members of the helping professions evolve into their roles, and some of the characteristics which surround role definition in professional practice. Professional characteristics examined include beliefs about others, beliefs about self, purpose of helping others, and task orientation. Also discussed are five professional helper role models: the Midwife Model, the Horticulture Model, the Craftsman Model, the God Model, and the Artist Model. The author concludes that aiding professionals to grow, both personally and in their jobs, is a difficult task which requires effort and should not be left to chance. (Author/BP) |
