AbstractPart of a series to introduce the culture of Alaskan Indians to elementary school students, the unit contains student materials related to seasonal Athabascan activities and a guide for classroom teachers to implement the materials. The major theme throughout the unit is the relationship of the Indians with the environment. The teacher's guide, which includes unit themes, activities, student and resource materials, and an annotated bibliography, is presented in five chapters. Lessons one through five: (1) introduce Athabascan culture and environment and investigate activities people might undertake to survive in such an environment; (2) illustrate autumn subsistence activities; (3) describe the story-telling, singing, and dancing which take place during winter settling-in; (4) discuss contact with outside groups through potlatches, war, and trade; and (5) consider canoe building and fishing activities of spring. Each lesson indicates objectives, materials, resources, activities, and background information. Learning activities include map work, literature analysis, class discussion, educational games, drawing and writing exercises, and dramatizations. The student materials include descriptive brochures and newspaper articles on Athabascan environment; tales of Athabascan family, social, spiritual, and hunting life; 16 artifact cards and an accompanying guide; and a book of riddles.
