AbstractThis book incorporates a general discussion of bilingualism and its relation to sociolinguistic facts with a description of the Redwood City, California, bilingual education project, begun in 1969. Chapter 1 describes the phenomenon of bilingualism, while Chapter 2 deals with the concept of bilingual education. The relationship between bilingualism and intelligence is discussed in Chapter 3, and Chapter 4 provides a broad-ranging discussion of the Mexican American people. Chapters 5 through 12 deal with the Redwood City study, and cover the research design and methodological procedures and a description of the Redwood City community (Chapter 5), school instructional programs during the time of the study (Chapter 6), the measurement of Spanish and English language proficiency of children in the bilingual program and the control group (Chapter 7), a linguistic account of deviant forms in the childrens' language (Chapter 8), a sociolinguistic account of language use patterns (Chapter 9), the effects of bilingual schooling on the acquisition of mathematical skills and on the development of certain intellectual abilities (Chapter 10), and children's attitudes towards Mexican and American culture and toward school and parental attitudes toward Spanish and English (Chapter 11). Chapter 12 states the conclusion of the study and offers a series of recommendations. (Author/CLK)
