AbstractAn overview of current approaches and perspectives for assessing faculty performance is presented. The evaluation principles and models are applicable for assessment goals of providing classroom feedback to an instructor, developing promotion, tenure and reappointment procedures, and offering an interface between faculty assessment and career development processes. Three specific models are explained in detail: the General Classroom Activity Assessment Model, the Goal-Method Approach to Assessment, and the Promotion, Tenure and Reappointment Model. The General Classroom Activity Assessment Model provides feedback on the efficacy of classroom procedures alone, while the Goal-Method Approach provides information regarding the adequacy of classroom goals, the methods themselves, and the methods as means of achieving the goals. The Promotion, Tenure, Reappointment Model is stressed as an assessment procedure designed by each affected individual. Such assessment models must be considered flexible and modifiable to meet the unique needs of each individual and academic unit. (Author/MV)
