Abstract | The first comprehensive attempt to measure student achievement in art on a national scale at the elementary, junior high, and high school levels is described. The assessment was conducted during 1974-75 with groups of nine-, 13-, and 17-year-olds. This report examines four design and drawing exercises that measure art-production activities. Art production objectives include ability to (1) produce original works of art, (2) express visual ideas fluently, (3) produce works of art with a particular expressive content, and (4) demonstrate application of media and forming processes. This report contains comparative score tables of the three age groups accompanied by drawings which were judged to be acceptable, unacceptable, or above average. The exercises involved drawing people seated at a table as seen from one end, a bedroom wall which incorporates a door, and three children at a playground at various distances from the viewer. In another drawing exercise, students were asked to show motion by using parts of the human anatomy or expressive devices. Techniques included foreshortening, overlapping, tilted planes, and point perspective. Results showed similar scores in males and females, lower scores in blacks and low-metropolitan students, and greatest increases in achievement between the ages of nine and 13. Original plans for comprehensive assessment of art education were curtailed in 1973 by budgetary changes. Additional exercises will be included in the 1978-79 art assessment program.
