Abstract | The 1975-1976 year was the second year of a demonstration of the feasibility of a computerized retrieval system for providing occupational and educational information to students in City University of New York community colleges. Although first year results were encouraging in terms of counselor and staff reactions, the amount of computer use was only moderate. For the 1975-76 year, three of the four original colleges were retained in the demonstration; another was added; and a fifth project site was created. During 1975-76, the computer was used at the five sites by 1,165 different students for a total of 1,786 times. Considering only the performance of the three colleges involved in the demonstration both years, use of the computer in the second year increased by 93%. Site-to-site variations in use were marked. Approximately two-thirds of the students using the computer were in occupationally-related or special programs. The largest student group using the computer was in its first semester. Different approaches to recruitment were tried, with special demonstrations and counselor referrals promoting the most use. Attitudes toward computerization remained positive. (Author/JLL) |
