Abstract | The National Longitudinal Study (NLS) is a long-term program designed to determine what happens to young adults after they leave high school, as measured by their subsequent educational and vocational activities, plans, aspirations, and attitude at various points in time. The second followup survey, which is reported here, began in October 1974 and ended in April 1975. There were 20,872 who completed a Second Follow-Up Questionnaire. Of those who completed the First Follow-Up Questionnaire, 94.6 percent also participated in the second followup survey. Statistics from both surveys were weighted to provide estimated values for the total population and were computed and tabulated for different subgroups classified by sex, race, socioeconomic status, academic ability, type of high school program, and region; and some two-way cross-tabulations of sex and race with each of the other variables have been done. Specifications of these classification variables are contained in Appendix A. The information presented in this capsule report is based mainly on the second followup and includes what the graduates are doing now, persistence in post-secondary education, participation in jobs, and family and community life. The Second Follow-Up Questionnaire is appended. (RC) |
