AbstractAn analysis of data is presented compiled from 135 institutional responses to questionnaires investigating the role of schools, colleges, and departments of education (SCDEs) in knowledge production and utilization (KPU). Explanation is made of the technique and rationale employed in categorizing the responding schools by degree level, institutional control and likely involvement in educational KPU, and also of certain characteristics limiting the generalizability of the findings. Analysis is presented in six areas: (1) general demographic characteristics (including institutional enrollment, membership in national educational organizations, accreditation number of education graduates, and size of facilities); (2) institutional missions in KPU (emphasis on KPU activities, posture in support of KPU); (3) organizational policies and practices in support of KPU (agents and agencies, personnel policies and practices, faculty support, organizational arrangements with extra-SCDE agencies and graduate student involvement); (4) KPU activities and products in SCDEs (dissemination, research and development, services, training programs); (5) other observations about KPU (legal or policy constraints on KPU activity, advantages of KPU involvement); and (6) predictions for the future (demographic projections, organization for KPU, and faculty activities in KPU dissemination, research and development, services offered and graduate training.
