AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of two experimentally induced variations in teacher control in elementary science classes with respect to pupil achievement in science process skills, and pupil preferences and perceptions relative to the treatment variations. Interactions of treatment with pupil characteristics were also explored. Ten sixth-grade classes were exposed to an 18 week program consisting of activities from a process-based science curriculum. The program was taught by two teaching modes differing on a number of teacher behaviors related to the concept of control. Transcripts of videotapes of each class were coded using a modified Bellack system. Measured pupil characteristics included ability, personality, self-concept of ability, locus of control, socioeconomic status, previous science experience, and attitudes toward school and science. Criterion measures consisted of paper-and-pencil tests of science process achievement, an interview instrument, pupil preference of treatment, and a pupil choice task. Preliminary results indicated no overall treatment differences existed with respect to achievement but strong treatment effects occurred for pupil preference. (MH)
