Abstract	The interactions and influences of various sociodemographic, experiential, and other factors on the career decisions of medical students are described. Special emphasis is on students' characteristics and career preferences at application, their medical schools, their first graduate year programs, and the hospitals of their first graduate year programs. A data base was constructed for the 13,222 U.S. medical school students who applied to the 1976 National Intern and Resident Matching Program (NIRMP). Relationships were examined between (1) student characteristics and special choice at application, at graduation and change/stability in specialty choice; (2) medical school characteristics and specialty choice at graduation and change/stability in specialty chioce; (3) student characteristics and medical school characteristics; (4) hospital characteristics and specialty choice at graduation; and (5) geographic mobility. The bivariate descriptions in this report make it apparent that the factors related to career decision are multiple. A logical sequel to this study would be a multivariate analysis that takes into account the simultaneity of relationships between student and medical school characteristics and career choices. (LBH)
