Abstract | Although the study of language variety has wide implications in several fields, it is an aspect of linguistics that has been neglected for too long in theory and practice. This collection takes a comprehensive look at dialectal, social, and stylistic variation in human communication. The reader consists of 13 contributions grouped into three parts. Part I, "Towards a Theory of Language Variety," is concerned with the building blocks that contribute to a more realistic theory of language variety. Parts II and III deal with language variety in descriptive and applied linguistics. The correlation between linguistic form and situational and functional variables is examined, as well as methods of description and comparison and the implications of the study of language variety for language teaching.
