Abstract | The ten essays in this collection are concerned with linguistic theory and with the inferences which can be drawn from it and applied to the field of reading. Major sections deal with grammar, phonology, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and the ethnography of speaking. In each case there is an attempt both to discuss recent developments within the field of linguistics and to consider the implications of these advances for approaches to reading instruction. (AA) |
