Abstract | Sixteen newspaper articles comprise this document, which served as the basis for a course by newspaper about oceans in 1976. United Press International and the National Newspaper Association helped distribute the articles to participating newspapers throughout the country. The articles, written by journalists, marine professors, oceanographic engineers, and literature specialists, constitute the "lectures." Supplementary materials include a book of readings, a study guide, and a sourcebook for community discussion leaders and educators. Content covers the whole range of human involvement with the sea: how man's perception of it has changed throughout history; social effects of marine pollution; extraction of food and minerals from the sea; importance of international law, naval power, and the merchant marine; and the role of the sea as a place of work and recreation. The articles are grouped according to six units, and each includes a biographical statement about the author. (Author/AV) |
