Abstract | Language comprehension is an immensely complex process involving the dynamic interaction of diverse sources of knowledge. In order to model this process, tools are needed which allow detailed specification of the process components. In this paper, the essential characteristics of a model of reading comprehension are discussed in the context of the development of a computer model of the processes involved. Specific examples of text are analyzed to illustrate some of the complexities. It is argued that such a model would be valuable both in the construction of tests and instructional materials and in the systematic study of reading. Issues in implementing the computer model are also considered. (AA) |
