| Abstract | In this project, Black children aged four and a half or older who had been placed in white adoptive homes were studied to determine whether or not they have a different self concept, a different degree of psychopathology and a different reaction to black and white skin color than do a similar group of Black children placed in Black homes. The Black children in both sets of families were rated, and a score given to each based upon his/her responses to a questionnaire, self-rating drawings, and observation. The data obtained indicated that no significant differences existed between the Black children adopted into White families and the Black children adopted into Black families in the areas of self esteem and psychopathology. However, the White family-raised Black children did have a different perception of Black and White skin color. They saw blackness and Black skin color more negatively than did Black children raised in Black families. (Author/MML) |
