AbstractThis report describes the procedures and results of a field test of an instructional unit intended for upper elementary and secondary teachers who have some access to computers. The unit consists of five booklets covering the rudiments of computer hardware, computer programing languages, the different roles the computer may play in instruction, how the computer is used in different curriculum areas, and how to select an instructional computer application that is appropriate to one's needs. The field test population consisted of teachers both inexperienced and experienced in computer use. Evaluation focused upon the attainment of educational objectives, the potential of competitive educational methods, and on important side effects from the use of the materials. The data indicated that the objectives were obtained and, unexpectedly, even the experienced group benefited. Competitive instruction through a seminar was judged not significantly different from booklet use, though booklets are thought to be independently usable. Side effects (unexpected outcomes) were numerous: notably, increased interest in computer use, in the demand for computer access, in the need to develop a communication network about computers and in an awareness of computer information resources. The objectives of each booklet and the questionnaires used are presented in appendices. (DAG)
