Abstract	The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of Century 21 and Gregg Diamond Jubilee shorthand systems in developing specific competencies in the first two semesters of shorthand. Achievement was measured by a specially constructed brief form/speed form test and dictation tests during the first semester, and by specially constructed word tests sampling the 1,000 most frequently used words and dictation tests during the second semester. The classes involved in the study were the first two semesters of shorthand offered at Oklahoma State University during the 1975-76 school year. During the 1975 fall semester, one section of Gregg shorthand and one of Century 21 shorthand were taught. During the spring semester those students continuing their study participated in the study. The conclusions reached are based upon the statistical analyses as well as observations made throughout the course of this study. The major conclusion was that a definite statement concerning the superiority of either method cannot be made based on statistical analyses of the data collected in this study.
