AbstractThe ways many people view higher education today are examined, especially some of the ways evaluators, researchers, and others are assessing college benefits and college impact. Trends toward getting a college education without going to college are discussed, with reference to the evaluation design of the input-environment-output model. College effects of college impact or environmental influences are defined as what is left after input differences have been accounted for. This model is criticized for suggesting that four years in college has no significant impact on a student. Suggestions are offered that depart from the common, experimental, cause-and-effect research model. A contextual model is proposed for evaluating student development in college. The basic features are suggested by the words: experience and events, environment, and effort, leading to development and "impress." (LBH)
