Abstract | The first volume of this series is divided into reports, studies, and preliminary results of work in progress. All were presented at a meeting on contrastive linguistics held in Romania. The project is intended to reveal the specificity of the structures and systems of Romanian and English with a view to comparing them and, on that basis, formulating certain norms underlying the practical teaching of the two languages. Following a review of the scope and the aim of the project, the reports deal with the activity of working groups for studies in phonology and phonetics, grammatical structure, vocabulary, and psycholinguistic research. A report on the Zagreb conference on English contrastive projects is also provided. The methodological studies cover such topics as the meeting of linguistic systems in the learner, second language teaching, the theoretical basis of contrastive syntax, and the relationship between contrastive analysis and the transformational method. Work in progress includes contrastive analyses of English and Romanian consonants, morphophonemics, vowel systems, lexicon, nominalization, and productive and non-productive structures. (CLK) |
