AbstractWord-deletion items to be used as measures of comprehension were constructed by deleting a content word from an ambiguous target sentence constrained by an accompanying context sentence. One hundred twenty, third-grade students and 120 sixth-grade students each completed all of the items as one of three degrees of contextual constraint. Analysis of their responses, using the Shannon-Wiener "H," showed a lack of difference in response uncertainty between grades under low constraint, suggesting that a grade-level difference under high constraint was due to the use of contextual information. This interaction also suggests that both third and sixth graders use contextual information and that sixth graders are more skilled in its use. Analysis of the number of correct responses from each pupil yielded significant main effects for grade and for context, which were interpreted as further evidence that sixth graders are more skilled at using contextual information and that only under a high degree of contextual constraint do word-deletion items measure primarily the use of semantic context to reduce uncertainty about meaning.
