AbstractThis activity is one of a series of 17 teacher-developed instructional activities for geography at the secondary-grade level described in SO 009 140. The activity investigates the role of story telling as illustrative of human values and as an appropriate medium for environmental education. The author identifies a need for individuals to know who they are in relation to their environment, and he recommends reflective inquiry on the many answers discovered by societies and individuals. Thus, myth, biography, autobiography, and religious-philosophical literature are seen to be useful in communicating a world view and sets of values and in developing personal awareness and empathy in the reader. Eighteen "self-revealing and clarifying activities" are suggested for students to put themselves in touch with their environment. Among them are fantasies about the life of inanimate objects and memories of past events in one's own life. A final exercise involves evaluating eight life-styles and rank-ordering them by preference. (Author/DB)
