| Abstract | The public has a right to know how its elected representatives (school board members) are governing the schools, including how effectively they are representing the public's interest in such important areas as collective bargaining. The tendency of some educators (and school boards) is to look down on citizens who show interest in educational governance. Such condescension is destructive both to the community and to education. School boards should trust the news media and the public to accurately represent and assimilate the facts. Boards should make more information on collective bargaining sessions available to the public. The public, if it understands the issues, will many times support the school board's position. (DS) |
