AbstractIf school administrators wish to influence the course of collective bargaining legislation, as well as other legislation relevant to education, they must become good politicians. They must understand the political process and realize that it's ongoing and continuous. However, many school administrators remain aloof from the political activity of lobbying. There is mistrust between administrators and legislators, although both groups share concern for improving education. Administrators should establish open communication with their legislators. The best approach to communication is a one-to-one, face-to-face approach. If such direct contact is not possible, a clearly written letter or telegram will serve. Such written communication, as well as oral, should be simple and direct, should be relevant to issues still under consideration, and should be meaningful for the legislator. He must have confidence in the administrator's credibility. Administrators should keep channels open to their legislators all the time, not just during debate over controversial legislation. Administrators can be valuable sources of information for legislators and other state officials. (Author/DS)
