Abstract | The purpose of this study was to test an experimental plan for improving attendance and achievement in an urban high school in order to determine its effects on the students. The plan for improving achievement and attendance was designed specifically to work effectively with the problems of inadequate student accountability, poor motivation within the student body including the lack of specifically defined goals and objectives, and an insufficient awareness of what constitute acceptable behavior within the school and the community. The plan was developed with the following four components: A Student Accountability Program, a Volunteer Teacher Probation Officer Program, a Mental Health Program, and, a Home Room Guidance Program. In analyzing the effects of the plan for improving achievement and attendance, the test was used to compute the statistical significance of changes in attendance and achievement in comparing 1973-74 with 1974-75. Attendance was improved 15.1 percent in 1974-75 over 1973-74. Achievement as measured by GPA showed a 0.62 improvement. Student self attitude showed a positive change of 13 percent, whereas student school attitudes showed a positive change of 10 percent. (Author/JMO |
