| Abstract | It was hypothesized in this study that, because of strong socialization pressures, gatekeepers would have stronger agreement and accuracy relations with the publisher than they would have with the audience and that the gatekeepers' congruency relations with the publisher and audience would not differ significantly. Additionally, research questions were posed to investigate whether specific editor types existed, and if so, what variables distinguished them; and whether the editors selected news items for a particular subgroup of the audience, and if so, what variables distinguished such a subgroup from others in the audience. A 54-item Q-sort was administered to ten editors, the publisher, and 39 readers of the Paducah, Kentucky "Sun-Democrat." Gatekeepers had a high congruency relation with both the publisher and the audience, each correlating at greater than .70 and not significantly different from one another. However, editors were found not to be as accurate as they perceived themselves to be. Only the gatekeeper-publisher accuracy relation was significantly greater than .70. No significant difference was found in the accuracy with which the editors estimated the preferences of either the publisher or the audience, however. Additional results of the study are discussed.
