Abstract | This guide contains practical questions designed to facilitate inquiry into any country or culture. A small group called Volunteers in Asia, which provides volunteer work and study opportunities in Asia, wrote the guide because they believe that direct observation and participation, when complemented by systematic inquiry, can lead to a clearer perception of another culture and people. A brief introduction explains how to use the study guide. A section on Methodology, intended for those who have never visited a foreign country before, provides simple suggestions including tips for playing the role of the ethnographer and ideas for recording data and observations. The major portion of the guide contains questions about various aspects of any foreign culture: economics, politics, social structure, role of women and men, religion and beliefs, music and art, food, education, communications, health and welfare, personal awareness and growth, and social development.
