| Abstract | This study examines the portrayal of sex-roles and the representation of males and females in selected preschool level picture books. The analyses include 125 picture books representing the work of 100 authors, randomly selected from a collection of approximately 1,000 picture books available in the children's department of the Mishawaka, Indiana Public Library. The items under analysis included the sex of the authors and illustrators and the percentage of males or females represented in the titles, main characters, illustrations, roles and activities of adults, and activities of children. The results indicate that females are underrepresented and that both males and females are limited to stereotyped roles in the picture books. Approximately 40 percent of the illustrations contained only male characters, while 11 percent contained only female characters, and 25 percent contained both male and female characters. Of the main characters portrayed in picture books, approximately 57 percent were male while only 13 percent were female. In addition, male characters depicted 81 different roles while female characters depicted only 17 different roles. A review of the literature of sexism in children's literature, textbooks, nursery rhymes, folktales, and picture books precludes the study. (DE) |
