Abstract | This series of six brief booklets on day care was designed by consultants of the Iowa Department of Social Services to help owners and employees of day care centers in Iowa. The first booklet deals with the organization and administration of day care centers and contains specific guidelines on: (1) the steps involved in starting a child care center, (2) the composition and role of boards, (3) operational policies, (4) incorporation, (5) finances and budget, (6) staffing and personnel, and (7) record keeping. Booklet two presents basic information on child development and behavior and brief summaries of the educational philosophies of (1) Watson (2) Lewin (3) Montessori (4) Piaget and (5) Freud. Booklet three contains suggestions on the child care environment and equipment needed. Programming of daily activities is covered in booklet four and is divided into programming for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Programming systems and field trips are also discussed and a bibliography is included. Booklet five presents information on health, nutrition and safety and includes: (1) a list of recommended childhood immunizations (2) a communicable disease chart (3) a checklist of first aid supplies (4) a daily food guide and (5) a safety check list.
