AbstractUnder job sharing, two people share responsibility for one full-time position. Each person has a permanent, part-time job with salary and fringe benefits prorated according to hours worked. Job sharing has been available in some Bay Area school districts for the last four years. For this preliminary report, nine districts--Alum rock, Fremont, Lafayette (Contra Costa County), Los Altos, Milpitas Unified, Palo Alto Unified, San Jose Unified, Union, and Whisman--have been selected for discussion. Participating teachers were enthisiastic in their endorsement of the practice. The teachers offer insight into such areas of concern as prior relationships between those sharing a job, the division of tasks, scheduling of time, decisions on goals, and communication. Few districts have enunciated specific policies and procedures concerning job sharing. Administrators involved, however, have provided information on current practices on the initiation of the option, the reversibility of the change to job sharing, and the handling of fringe benefits and salary advancement. In addition, district perspectives on possible financial savings and on the qualitative benefits derived from sharing are presented. Included in the appendix is a chart of current practices in the districts reviewed. (Author/IRT)
