AbstractThis study describes the function of the communication arts resource person engaged in "instructional intervention," a means of consultation by which the resource person enters the classroom and works with the classroom teacher to provide an enrichment program that meets the students' needs and extends the efforts of the classroom teacher. The resource person worked with three fifth-grade teachers in seven language arts sections and three sixth-grade teachers in seven language arts sections. Two methods of instruction were used: a traditional prescriptive method and a generative method incorporating principles of the inquiry method. A total of 390 children were taught to organize and present an oral report. Some of the conclusions which were drawn were: the function of the resource person as consultant and teacher was identified by teachers and students; both of the alternative methods used by the resource person produced more competent performances by students than were anticipated; the methods did not differentially influence the students' and teachers' perception of the resource person; and instruction by the resource person and the presentation of oral reports did alter the children's perceptions of their oral communication skills.
